Send Push
Felix Rojas, a 44-year-old Brooklyn man, has been charged with rape almost three weeks after he allegedly had sex with a dead man's body on a subway train traveling through lower Manhattan, the New York Post reported.

The rape, which occurred on an R train near the Whitehall Street stop, had stunned the city and many people are trying to make sense of the horrific nature of the attack.

Rojas, who surrendered to authorities on Sunday evening with his son in tow, allegedly struck the lifeless body of 37-year-old Jorge Gonzalez, a husband and father who inexplicably perished on the subway. The NYPD reports that Rojas was indicted for rape when surveillance footage revealed him committing the ghastly act on the dead man.

The timeline of events

In the early hours of April 8 evening, Gonzalez stepped onto the subway at approximately 8 pm (local time). The suspect, Rojas, is believed to have come aboard the train approximately three hours later, but it is unclear where he hopped on the train.

Gonzalez, who suffered from alcoholism and cirrhosis, had already passed away by the time Rojas was suspected to have committed the alleged assault, shortly before midnight. The suspect walked off the train at approximately 12:08 am as per surveillance footage by police.

The police's release of a public photo of Rojas riding the subway train eventually resulted in his identification and eventual arrest. The NYPD had been attempting to gather the facts of the crime, which was disturbing and perplexing based on the type of assault on a corpse.

A tragic loss and mysterious death

The reason behind Gonzalez's death is not yet known. His estranged wife reported that he battled alcoholism and cirrhosis, but no official cause of death was offered by authorities.

The case has sparked widespread indignation, with many appalled by the gruesome nature of the crime and the slow unfolding of events that culminated in Rojas's arrest. As the investigation unfolds, questions persist regarding the circumstances of Gonzalez's death and how such a heinous crime could be committed on a crowded subway train.

Rojas is now charged with some serious offenses, and his arrest has provided some closure to the case, but the public is still shaken by the gruesome quality of the offense.
