NEW DELHI: Chief Justice B R Gavai Friday administered oath of office to three new SC judges, Justices N V Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi and A S Chandurkar. With this, SC reached its constitutionally sanctioned strength of 34 judges.
On May 26, the collegium comprising CJI Gavai, and Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, J K Maheshwari and B V Nagarathna, had recommended to Centre to appoint Karnataka HC CJ Anjaria, Gauhati HC CJ Bishnoi and Bombay HC's Justice Chandurkar as SC judges.
Justice Anjaria and Chandurkar would have a little less than a five-year tenure each, while Justice Bishnoi would have less than four-year tenure in SC. Justice Anjaria was appointed as a judge of Gujarat HC on Nov 21, 2011, and took oath as CJ of Karnataka HC on Feb 25, 2024. Justice Bishnoi was appointed as judge of Rajasthan HC on Jan 8, 2013, and became CJ of Gauhati HC on Feb 5, 2024. Justice Chandurkar practiced at Nagpur bench of Bombay HC since 1992 and was appointed Bombay HC judge on June 21, 2013.
On their first day in office, Justice Chandurkar was the bench partner of CJI Gavai and Justice A G Masih. Justice Bishnoi was part of the bench of Justices Kant and Dipankar Datta while Justice Anjaria was part of the bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sanjay Kumar.
