Former NBA player Stan Love died after a long illness. His son and Miami Heat power forward Kevin Love penned a heartfelt open letter in his memory on Instagram, in which he called him his first hero. Kevin shared a throwback picture of his father and a picture of them holding hands from what seems like Stan’s final days. He also opened up about the time when they were not in touch and expressed regret for losing that time with him.

Kevin Love reflects on his relationship with father Stan LoveKevin Love wrote in Stan Love’s memory on Instagram, “Dad, you fought for a long time. The hardest stretch being these past 6 months. The most painful to witness being these last few weeks. And even at the end as you continued to deteriorate - I still saw you as a Giant. My Protector. My first Hero.”

Sharing about Stan Love’s love for his family and how his last wish was fulfilled, Kevin wrote, “Your only wish was to be at home surrounded by your family when you took your dying breath. That breath came. And now it’s time to rest.”

Kevin went on to call Stan his “greatest teacher” and revealed that he taught him qualities like “respect, kindness, humor, wit, ambition, work ethic, grit, aggressive will and the insight that failure brings.”

The father and son duo had differences between them over the years. Mourning over this, Kevin said, “I mourn the times I felt angry and isolated - my heart weighs heavy knowing we lost that time and can’t get it back. But our division led to me finding myself. I was running from something but that time away provided the wisdoms of forgiveness and reconciliation. And an unwavering sense that he loved me through it all, in every moment.”

Kevin went on to reveal that the best lesson his father taught him in his last days was “how to die with peace about how you’ve lived.” He called it his greatest gift and added, “Teaching me that healing happens in your soul and that healing is there for the taking, even in the face of imminent death. Dad loved his family unconditionally and left his children with one of life’s great lessons.”

Feeling heartbroken, Kevin reflected on their hard times and added that “things that once seemed so complicated and confusing now seem transparent.”

“Like all of us, my Dad was imperfect. But despite his flaws, and my own, we are a successful story of father and son. A never ending bond, rooted in love, that will forever remain eternal. Dad, I’m so proud to be your son. My only hope is that you’re proud of me. It was all I ever wanted. Thank you for everything. I love you,” he added.

The official account of the Miami Heat dropped a heart emoticon in reaction to the post. Kevin’s wife, Kate Love, also dropped heart emoticons in the comments section. Former WNBA player Nancy Lieberman wrote, “Kev, those are some of the deepest words that I have heard. I'm so grateful that you made amends with your dad.”
