Last Vegas Raiders' draft raises eyebrows: The team's refusal to fix nickel corner could haunt them in 2025

Send Push
The 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay brought a wave of talent into the league, with a record-setting 30 defensive tackles selected and unexpected storylines — like Shedeur Sanders’ dramatic slide to the fifth round. While many teams addressed key needs, the Las Vegas Raiders exit the draft with a glaring question still unanswered: who will man the crucial nickel cornerback position?

Nickel cornerback remains a pressing defensive need for the Raiders
Despite a focused three-day draft strategy, the Raiders did not secure a reliable option for the nickel cornerback role — a position that is increasingly vital in today’s pass-heavy NFL. While Darnay Holmes is currently on the roster, his experience is limited. Holmes has started in only 12 of 70 career games and logged just one start for the Raiders last season. His performance so far suggests he may be better suited for depth rather than a starting role.

Adding to the complexity, Las Vegas used a third-round pick on Darien Porter, a promising but inexperienced cornerback who primarily played on the outside during his collegiate career. Porter’s athleticism and upside are encouraging, but asking him to switch to the slot and become an immediate contributor is a significant gamble.

Free agency likely holds the answer — with Mike Hilton as a strong candidate

With the draft behind them and limited in-house options, the Raiders are likely to turn to the free agent market. One name that stands out is veteran Mike Hilton, who has quietly been one of the league’s most consistent slot defenders. Hilton, who played the past four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, brings experience, toughness, and reliability to the table. He has started in 23 games since 2023 and is known for his instincts and aggressive play in tight spaces.

Given the Raiders’ aspirations to improve their defensive performance — especially against high-powered AFC West offenses — plugging the gap at nickel cornerback with a dependable veteran makes strategic sense.

While the draft brought several promising rookies into the fold, Las Vegas still has work to do. With minicamps on the horizon and free agency still active, the team must act quickly to shore up this key position. Whether they bring in a seasoned player like Hilton or uncover a hidden gem, the decision could shape how competitive the Raiders' defense will be in 2025.

The clock is ticking — and Raider Nation is watching.
