Residents of Congresbury, a charming village near Bristol, have until Friday this week to visit a beloved pub as it is closing due to financial constraints. Landlords of The Old Inn, Ricky Baillie and his partner Kailem, will close the pub on August 15.

It comes after BristolWorld reported that the couple had decided to leave the 16th-century inn after they claim it lost almost £40,000 (£38k) due to roadworks on A370. That was the "final nail in the coffin" as "customers just couldn't get to them".

Works on the major A-road began in July this year and are expected to end sometime at the end of this month.

Baillie wrote on social media: "It is with an incredibly heavy heart that Kailem, I & Kirstie have taken the decision to leave The Old Inn.

"This is not a decision that has been taken lightly, but in light of the current financial climate we are sadly left with no other option.

"As we are all aware, this country is in the middle of a cost of living crisis. People are struggling to pay their bills, let alone find spare cash to enjoy a pint or a meal out.

"We are dealing with extortionate rises in rent, rates, beer, beer gas, utilities, and national insurance contributions. Even the price of crisps has risen.

"The locals are fantastic, and many friendships have been made.

"Unfortunately, the pub industry has changed - and not for the better."

Kirstie, which also helps the Punch Taverns-owned pub, wrote in a social media post: "This departure date is a lot sooner than expected but something completely outside of our control.

"I have absolutely loved running this pub. It's a beautiful pub with a lot of history, situated in a fantastic village and we definitely have the best bunch of people drinking in here.

"In the short time I've been here I've met many special people and made some friends for life. I will be sad to leave the bar.

"The pubco will put a holding manager in whilst they find new landlords for the lease so please continue to support this fabulous pub.

"So let's celebrate Friday and drink the stock dry."
