Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is finally here, with the cast of the famous ITV period drama saying an emotional farewell after 15 years.

The final film of the Downton Abbey franchise, directed by Simon Curtis from a screenplay by Julian Fellowes, hit UK cinemas yesterday (September 12).

Fans have been left in tears as the show's beloved characters waved a final goodbye, with one warning on Rotten Tomatoes: "Take tissues".

Another wrote: "They wrapped up the whole saga so well. I was crying. Beautiful and triumphant."

A third added: "Loved this movie. It wrapped up loose ends and answered questions. The ending did make me cry. I'm very sorry to see it over."

The synopsis for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale reads: "The cinematic return of the global phenomenon follows the Crawley family and their staff as they enter the 1930s.

"When Mary finds herself at the center of a public scandal and the family faces financial trouble, the entire household grapples with the threat of social disgrace.

"The Crawleys must embrace change as the staff prepares for a new chapter with the next generation leading Downton Abbey into the future."

There are three Downton Abbey movies in total, with Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale confirmed as the third and final film in the franchise.

The first movie, entitled Downton Abbey, came out in 2019, while second film Downton Abbey: A New Era was released in 2022.
