Base jumpers stuck dangle 60ft up phone mast for more than an hour after stunt fail

The two men had to be rescued by firefighters from the telecommunication mast after they were snared 20 metres high up for a nail-biting 80 minutes.

Ambulance crews treated the one man for a suspected fractured leg while the other was treated for minor injuries.

Fire crews used an aerial ladder to reach the parachutists which were on the A1124 between Halstead and Braintree in Essex, just before 6pm on Sunday night.

Their feet firmly touched the ground around 80 minutes later and they were left in the care of the Ambulance Service and taken to Broomfield Hospital, Essex.

The Hazardous Area Response Team, which is part of the East of England Ambulance Service, said it was called to rescue the "base jumpers" after their stunt had "gone a little bit wrong".

Essex fire and rescue sent three crews for the rescue mission after the single parachute became entangled in the mast.

A spokeswoman for the force said the two men, whose ages are unknown, were attached together but one of them men was "suspended".

She added: "Crews used the aerial ladder platform to rescue the parachutists from the mast."

It is not yet known whether the two men were base jumpers or parachutists.

Commenting on Facebook about the drama, Maddy Tunbridge said: "We stopped and offered help. They both seemed fine. Only one was caught.

"The other had climbed up to help his friend. I don't think anyone was injured. Just couldn't get down."

The East of England Ambulance Service sent two rapid response vehicles, an ambulance, and the hazardous area response team to treat the two men at the scene.

A spokesman for the trust added: "After treatment, they were both taken to Broomfield Hospital for fur further assessment, neither are believed to be in serious or life-threatening conditions."

Essex Police confirmed no arrests have been made and no investigation will take place.
