A school bus crash has left ten people injured, including nine students, according to local officials.

The incident occurred on a rural road just outside of the city on Wednesday. Travis County Emergency Services District reported that those hospitalised as a result of the accident included the driver and nine students.

Assistant Chief Kevin Parker from Austin-Travis County Medical Emergency Services told NBC News that one of the injuries was life-threatening, while two others were potentially so. However, he confirmed that the remaining injuries were not life-threatening.

Superintendent Bruce Gearing of the Leander Independent School District revealed to NBC News that there were 43 people on the bus at the time of the crash. The accident happened right after school had ended but before any students had been dropped off.

The cause of the crash remains unclear. An official from the Texas Department of Public Safety said the vehicle, described by Gearing as a 2024 model with seatbelts, drove off the right side of the road before it rolled over, reports the Mirror US.

The official noted a slight curve in the road and stated that a preliminary investigation is ongoing.

Images from the scene showed the damaged bus on its side. Gearing described the driver as a seasoned veteran and said the bus primarily carries students from a local elementary school.

It remains unclear how many pupils were wearing seatbelts when the bus overturned, he said.

"This part of our Leander ISD family has been through so much already this summer with the floods and this tragedy this afternoon is really breaking our hearts," Gearing said. "We want each of those students and their families to know that our prayers are with them, our thoughts are with them, and we will do everything that we can in our power to support them."

The conditions of the other students hurt in the crash were not immediately disclosed.
