Russia has claimed to have achieved a major success against a deadly disease like cancer. Scientists there have developed a new mRNA-based cancer vaccine, "Enteromix", which has shown 100 percent effective results in initial pre-clinical trials. It is being claimed that this vaccine can change the direction of cancer treatment in the future. Currently, it is being prepared for trials on humans. Let us tell you about it.

Why is this discovery special?

Cancer is one of the biggest causes of death worldwide. According to the WHO, every year around 10 million people die from cancer. Current treatments like chemotherapy and radiation not only harm cancer cells but also healthy cells. On the other hand, this new Russian vaccine makes the body's immunity so strong that it attacks only cancer cells.

How does the vaccine work?

Enteromix is a personalized mRNA vaccine. That is, it is made based on the genetic information of each patient's tumor. AI technology is used in this. Scientists can take a sample of the patient's tumor and design a vaccine accordingly in just a few hours. This vaccine "trains" the body's immune system so that it can recognize cancer cells and destroy them.

How are the initial results?

According to Sputnik, the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) has announced that this mRNA-based vaccine has been successful in pre-clinical trials. Agency chief Veronika Skvortsova said that this vaccine has shown not only safety but also effectiveness. The report said that this vaccine has given significant results in reducing tumors and slowing their growth. Most importantly, it has also been considered safe for repeated use. Skvortsova further said that this vaccine will be prepared differently for each patient and it will be customized based on their RNA profile. The first variant of this vaccine will be used to treat colorectal cancer. Apart from this, the second variant is being developed for glioblastoma (brain cancer) and certain types of melanoma (skin cancer).

The start of clinical trials for the vaccine was announced at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025), which took place from June 18 to 21 in the northern Russian city of St Petersburg. The event, organised by the Roscongress agency under the Russian President’s office, showcased Russia’s progress in medical research and biotechnology.

According to Medpath's report, the Enteromics vaccine uses four safe viruses that directly attack and destroy cancer tumors and also strengthen the immune system so that the body can fight the disease itself. After years of testing, this vaccine has proven to be very effective. Reports show that it has slowed the growth of cancer tumors and, in some cases, has completely eliminated the tumors. Now that the trials have been successfully completed, only regulatory approval (government approval) is pending. If it gets approved, Enteromics can become the world's first personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, which will be available to the general public.

Success Rate and Challenges

Reports have stated the success rate of the vaccine to be 100 percent, but experts say that these are just initial results. The real effect will be known only after large-scale trials on humans. Therefore, it would be premature to call it the "ultimate cure" for cancer.

The Russian government has said that after the trial is successful, this vaccine will be given free to the citizens. However, the estimated price of one dose is being told to be around 24–25 thousand rupees (300,000 rubles). Russia's new mRNA cancer vaccine Enteromix, can prove to be a big change for medical science. If it remains equally effective on humans, it can become a game-changer in the treatment of cancer. The eyes of the whole world are fixed on the trials to be held in the coming months.
