The wait is finally over! Navi Mumbai International Airport ( NMIA ) opens its doors today, and here is a first look at what the future of air travel near Mumbai looks like. Sprawling across a massive 1,160 hectares near Panvel, the airport combines futuristic design, modern amenities, and eco-friendly innovations. Set to be inaugurated this afternoon by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, NMIA is Mumbai’s second international airport and India’s largest greenfield aviation project, built at a staggering INR 19,650 crore. With plans to handle 90 million passengers annually in the coming years, the airport promises to ease congestion at Mumbai’s existing airport and bring a seamless, modern experience to travelers.

From the very first glance, NMIA impresses with its architectural elegance. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the London-based firm behind Beijing Daxing International Airport, the terminal draws inspiration from the lotus, India’s national flower. Our photos showcase soaring glass façades, jaali-inspired lattice work, and sunlit interiors that make the spaces feel airy and welcoming.

The airport isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s built for comfort and efficiency. The photos reveal spacious check-in areas, well-organized lounges, and wide corridors designed to handle both domestic and international travelers with ease. Sustainability is visible too, with solar panels, EV buses, and water taxi connectivity hinted at in the terminal’s layout.

NMIA is designed to handle passengers in style. Four terminals and two parallel runways will serve both domestic and international flights, while a VVIP terminal, set to be ready by 2030, will cater to business leaders, celebrities, and dignitaries. Our photo series highlights the modern boarding gates, high-tech security zones, and aesthetic design elements that promise a next-level airport experience.

For those wondering about airline operations, IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air are confirmed to start flights from NMIA. The airport has been assigned the IATA code NMI, distinguishing it from Mumbai’s existing CSMIA (BOM). In the coming months, travelers can expect dozens of daily flights connecting Navi Mumbai to domestic and international destinations.
