The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is back in the headlines with a high-profile sweep involving Malayalam cinema stars. Mammootty’s property in Chennai reportedly came under ED scrutiny, adding to the growing list of raids targeting celebrities over alleged tax evasion and illegal imports. Two ED officers and a team of CRPF officials are at Malayalam star Mammootty's Chennai-based property that houses his production company, according to a India Today report.
News agency ANI confirmed that the Enforcement Directorate’s Kochi Zonal Office on Wednesday launched extensive search operations at 17 locations across Kerala and Tamil Nadu under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999. The raids are part of an ongoing investigation into the smuggling of high-end luxury cars and unauthorised foreign exchange transactions.
The searches, ANI said citing sources, were triggered by intelligence reports revealing a well-organised syndicate involved in illegally importing and registering premium vehicle. The network is suspected of using forged documents and shell entities to evade customs duties and launder foreign currency. The operation is aimed at identifying key players in the racket and uncovering financial links between vehicle smugglers and cross-border hawala operators.
This comes on the heels of September 23 raids across Kerala, which saw luxury cars seized from stars like Prithviraj Sukumaran, Dulquer Salmaan, and Amit Chakkalackal.
Earlier, customs authorities conducted coordinated raids at around 30 locations in Kerala, uncovering 36 luxury cars brought in from Bhutan using forged documents.
Dulquer Salmaan, meanwhile, has been ordered by the Kerala High Court to approach the adjudicating authority under the Customs Act, 1962, for the provisional release of his Land Rover Defender seized during the crackdown, dubbed ‘Operation Numkhor.’
Dulquer Salmaan and Mammootty's work
On the professional front, Dulquer is keeping busy with the Tamil-Telugu bilingual film, Kaantha. A teaser released on his 42nd birthday showcases a gripping story centred on an estranged father-son relationship, giving fans something to look forward to amidst the legal drama.
Superstar Mammootty earlier his month made a return to the film sets in Hyderabad, after an eight-month break due to a health scare that required treatment in Chennai. The 74-year-old actor expressed heartfelt gratitude to fans and well-wishers, saying, “Thanks for all the prayers. They came with love, and they had their effect.”
Earlier, he had surprised photographers in Chennai by personally driving his luxury car and greeting the media with a smile before walking away calmly with his wife. Mammootty is now shooting for Patriot, a big-budget film directed by Mahesh Narayanan, featuring Mohanlal and Fahadh Faasil. Narayanan confirmed that 60% of the film was completed before the delay caused by Mammootty’s illness. After two weeks in Hyderabad, the team will head to London and Kochi for the final schedule. His comeback has reignited excitement among fans across Malayalam cinema.
