The Department of Homeland Security ( DHS) announced that more than 2 million illegal aliens have either been removed or self-deported from the United States since January 20, 2025. The administration is on track to deport nearly 600,000 illegal aliens by the end of President Trump’s first year back in office. Of the total, approximately 1.6 million left voluntarily, while over 400,000 were formally deported.
“The numbers don’t lie: 2 million illegal aliens have been removed or self-deported in just 250 days—proving that President Trump’s policies and Secretary Noem’s leadership are working and making American communities safe,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. She added that enforcement is focusing on the “worst of the worst” criminal illegal aliens, sending a clear warning: self-deport or face arrest and deportation.
The DHS emphasised that US Customs and Border Protection has released zero illegal immigrants into the country for four consecutive months. A United Nations study cited in the announcement reported a 97% drop in illegal migration from Central America and noted that nearly half of prospective migrants abandoned their journey fearing detention or deportation.
The administration is also expanding deportation infrastructure through new detention facilities, including Alligator Alcatraz, Speedway Slammer, Cornhusker Clink, and Louisiana Lockup, alongside signing over 1,000 287(g) agreements across 40 states. DHS emphasized that all new hires within Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have gone to US citizens, reinforcing domestic employment priorities.
The department said these measures will make enforcement faster and more efficient, continuing the surge in removals and reinforcing a “zero tolerance” stance on illegal immigration.
